How to Become a Member

Becomming a member of The Guitar Circle is easy. The following information explains what you need to do if you are a composer, performer or tutor.

For Guitar Performers and Composers

Before you can have your details published on the site we will need your bio, some photos, excerpts of your music and excerpts from your score if you are a composer. Your bio and information will be used to build your own unique pages on The Guitar Circle website and like other members you can use these pages as your own promotional site. Send your details together with a cheque for £50 made payable to: The Guitar Circle to 12 Lambridge, Bath BA1 6BJ. Within two weeks of your submission and subject to the clearing of your cheque your bio will be published. The bio will be published to a temporary location and you will be asked to review and approve it via email. When you have approved the copy, it will be moved to the correct location. Before submitting your bio and cheque, please read the legal and privacy statement.

Writing your bio

Your bio should be between 500 and 1,000 words. We will put this into a web page of your own. You can then refer to this page explicitly should you wish. The URL will be theguitarcircle.com/FirstinitialLastname.asp. To keep with a consistent theme, the bio is split into four sections. Always remember to write in the third person and please tell us whether you are a composer, performer or both.

Introduction

Provide a brief introduction for yourself. This is almost like a personal statement. This can sometimes be a little tricky but do not be embarrassed.

History

Provide a potted history of your background. As pointers you may want to consider:

  • When you first started playing.
  • Your influences.
  • Tutor names (if they are well known).
  • Groups you have played with.
  • Recordings.
  • Concerts.

If your work has been reviewed by any part of the media put extracts in and name the source. You will have the opportunity to list your work later in the bio too.

Now

Tell us what you are doing now. As before some possible pointers are:

  • Current and future works.
  • Upcoming major events. You do not need to name all of your events here as they will be covered in the news section of the site. However, should you be working on a recording it would look good here too.

Once again, if your work has been reviewed by any part of the media put extracts in and name the source.

Note   Please also bear in mind that some of the information will become out-of-date over time and you will need to make amendments as and when necessary.

Works

Here is your opportunity to list any pieces you have written or recorded and you can also provide excerpts of your work.

Recorded music

If you wish to provide excerpts of your work you can do this on CD or in MP3 or WMA format. If you are providing the piece electronically, MP3 files should be created at 128Kbps and WMA files at 96Kbps. We will not publish the entire piece and will need to know what part of the piece you would like played. Provide us with the starting point (in seconds) and we will do the rest. If you want to create the excerpt yourself that is OK with us too. However, to keep the size down, please ensure it runs for no longer than 30 seconds. Please take into account any copyright issues will be your responsibility and not The Guitar Circle's.

Score

If you are a composer and wish to have extracts of your score published we will need a couple of sheets from each piece in either the original or scanned copy. No messy photocopies please! If you are providing the score electronically, the score should have been scanned at a minimum of 300dpi and saved in either TIFF or JPEG file formats. As score is pretty much black and white the TIFF file should not be too large but if it is over 2MB in size, please use the JPEG format.

Photographs

We want to keep the photographs on the site reasonably consistent but at the same time we recognise that arranging photo sessions is not practical. While you do not have to provide photos they do go a long way to presenting a fuller picture of yourself. For your bio, we will need a couple of portrait shots of you. These can be in either colour or black and white as we will change them to duo tone ourselves. Each photo is a hyperlink to another page with a montage of your photos. You can provide additional photos of yourself at work if you wish and these may be added to the montage. These photos can then be used in press releases if necessary. If you wish to get a feel for the style have a closer look at the site.

Your catalogue

We can create your own individual catalogue of recordings and/or compositions where you can advertise your works for sale. These will also be included in the guitar circle's full catalogue. If you wish your pieces to be placed in the catalogue please provide us with the following information:
