Gary Ryan

Gary Ryan made his London debut for the Park Lane Group Young Artists Series at the Purcell Room on London's South Bank in 1994 to exceptional critical acclaim. He has since performed extensively throughout the UK and abroad, winning universal praise for his formidable technique and musicianship.

He was appointed as a Professor of Guitar at the Royal College of Music in 1996 at the age of 27 and has gained a strong reputation as one of the finest teachers of his generation.

Gary Ryan was born in England in 1969 and studied at the Guildhall School of Music with David Miller and at the Royal Academy of Music, where he won a scholarship to study with Timothy Walker in 1987. In 1991 he graduated with first class honours and a host of awards including the Julian Bream Prize, the John Mundy String Prize and an award for the most outstanding all round student.

In 1997 he was made an Honorary Associate of the Royal Academy of Music in recognition of his achievements and was recently appointed Principal Examiner in Guitar for the Guildhall School of Music, where he teaches in the Junior School. In addition to a busy solo performing career, Gary is also a member of the well known English guitar quartet 'Tetra' and also teaches on the BMus undergraduate programme at the Royal College of Music. He is widely in demand as an adjudicator and examiner and has also been the course leader at the Bath International Guitar Festival since 1998.

Quotes

...jewel-like precision… a stylish, thoughtful and rhythmically vital impression... technical prowess and insight... such fluency and musicality.

Geoffrey Norris / THE DAILY TELEGRAPH

...I sat up for a guitarist of outstanding musicality called Gary Ryan... impeccable but pliant strength that handsomely defined the contours of the writing...

Michael White / THE INDEPENDENT

...here is a player who knows what magical sounds can be coaxed from the guitar. His technique is formidable and his programme planning quite excellent... the whole recital was a delight... high class musicianship.

Geoffrey Crankshaw / MUSICAL OPINION

...Gary Ryan electrified a lunchtime audience… with a wonderful 'Aquarelle' by Sergio Assad, which he surpassed with an even more wonderful 'Sonata' by Ginastera. Having heard it some twenty times by different guitarists, I can say this was one of the best...
