David Hunt
History
David Hunt was born in Croydon, Surrey. Following an
early grounding in music through the local church choir,
Dave taught himself to play keyboards and discovered an
interest in composition through improvisation.
In 1999 Dave took this interest further and completed
a BA (Hons) Music degree at Bath Spa University College,
specialising in composition.
Dave studied with various composers including Deirdre
Gribbin and Geoff Smith. While at Bath Spa University,
Dave formed a close association with several exciting young
guitar performers including Graham Sims and Gordon Dunn.
This led to the completion of '2 preludes' for solo guitar,
which was given its first performance in June 2001 by Gordon
Dunn.
Dave's work has been performed both by amateur and professional
musicians in both the UK and Europe. Performers and ensembles
have included The Orlando Consort, The London Brass Ensemble
and the Paragon Saxophone Quartet.
In July 2000 Dave's saxophone quartet 'Metropolis' was
selected by SPNM for short-listed status. Recent performances
have included the world premiereof '4 Angels' (City of
London Festival/SPNM), which was subsequently broadcast
on BBC Radio 3 and the UK Premiere of 'Metropolis' by the
Paragon Sax Quartet at Sussex University, Brighton.
Now
Dave is currently studying with Howard Skempton and working
on a series of short piano works and a theguitarcircle.com
commission for a new solo guitar piece. He is also planning
his first orchestral score.
On the music
"The main influence in my music is probably city
and urban life, mixed with knowledge of the music of many
other genres. The immediacy of the music may stem from
my beginnings in improvisation and experimentation. I'm
concerned with creating memorable moods, feelings, textures
and colours much more than intricate and complicated frameworks
with which to explain the composition process."
